Simhastha: Akhara parishad warns Madhya Pradesh govt of boycotting Shahi Snan

INDORE: Members of akhara parishad on Monday warned the state government of boycotting the holy bath in Kshipra during Simhastha 2016, if the river is not cleaned before the festival in Ujjain.

The warning came after delegation led by akhara parishad president Narendra Giri and secretary Hari Giri, reached Kshipra river in Ujjain to take stock of Simhastha 2016 preparations.

They said that chief minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan had been claiming to have linked Narmada with Kshipra river. "Is this what he has claimed? River Kshipra is in a sorry state. He only makes claims and does not specify the date when Narmada will be merged with Kshipra and the river will be cleaned," they said.

The seers squarely blamed people of Ujjain for the sorry situation. "We come here every 12 years. You have been here all the time. Look what have you done to river Kshipra," said Narendra Giri.

They claimed that lakhs of pilgrims will visit Ujjain to attend Simhastha from April 22, 2016 to May 21, 2016. The state government is spending crores of rupees on preparations, "With barely 130 days left for the festival to begin, the cleaning work of river Kshipra is not adequate," Narendra Giri said.

"If the river is not cleaned in time, we will not take the holy dip, instead stage a dharna in Ujjain," he warned.

Members of 10 Shaiv and 3 Vaishnav akharas are expected to take part in Shahi Snan on April 22, May 9 and May 21. District administration took several steps to clean Kshipra river. The administration also plans to use ozone gas to clean and purify the river during Simhastha.
